![]() Wandering Son is a sequence of moments like this. When Shuichi comments on how cute a dress in Yoshino’s bedroom is, Yoshino asks her, “Why don’t you wear it?” sparking the very idea in Shuichi that actually, she can. Shuichi learns that being a girl is possible from Yoshino, who refuses to wear the feminine clothes his family buys him. Shuichi identifies in a very nuanced, true to life way - she is walking a line between boyhood and girlhood, experimenting with gender presentation in safe environments, and making friends with other trans kids - Takatsuki Yoshino, a transmasc kid in her grade. Shimura tells the meandering (wandering?) story of Nitori Shuichi, a transfeminine 5th grader who is still discovering herself. ![]() Wandering Son is how it’s done, full stop. Trigger warnings: F slur, the mundane transphobia of daily life, misgendering ![]() Note 2: I will be using she/her for Shuichi and he/him for Yoshino, although neither of them are “out” to that extent in the story. Note: This book is appropriate for almost all ages (use discretion, there are slurs) ![]()
